Watch the Swifts' nightly roost in September!

9/11/2015

Picture
We went down to Fir Grove Park, by the very tall chimney at The Clay Place (between the soccer fields and the Arts Center), to watch the Vaux's Swifts ("vawks") come in to land and roost for the night tonight. It was SOOOOO neat! ☺

We learned that they arrive in Oregon in late April, court their mates in May/June, and have their 4-6 eggs laid and hatched by July. They depart beginning in late August. During the month of September, large groups of swifts pass through Oregon, locating appropriate chimneys and hollowed snags to return to year after year. During their migration, they typically only stay a few days to a couple of weeks before continuing on their migratory journey.

Here's what you should know if you go to watch the swifts:

The peak of the swifts migrating through Roseburg is right about now, for the next few days to a week. If you arrive around sunset, literally thousands of them will descend into the chimney within 10-20 minutes, so you may want to come 5-10 minutes before the sunset times listed below, just so you don't miss them. It's actually pretty amazing to watch! On Friday evenings (Sept 4-25, 2015), they have kids' crafts starting at 6:30, and Umpqua Valley Audobon volunteers will be on hand to provide information about the swifts and their behavior. But you can actually arrive any evening in September on your own and watch the swifts do their nightly descent. I think we'll go again this weekend to watch it!

Here are the sunset times for September:

Sept. 12 - 7:38 p.m.
Sept. 13 - 7:26 p.m.
Sept. 14 - 7:24 p.m.
Sept. 15 - 7:22 p.m.
Sept. 16 - 7:20 p.m.

2015 "Homeschoolers' Day" at Oaks Amusement Park

9/5/2015

Picture
This year's "Homeschool Day at Oaks Park" will take place on Friday, September 11th, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.!  This is held at Oaks Park in Portland, Oregon near OHSU but down by the river (7805 SE Oaks Park Way, Portland, OR 97202).  Phone: 503-233-5777.

The whole park is open to homeschoolers and their families that day, and ride bracelets are discounted to $11.50 per rider.

You can find out more about Oaks Park on their website:

http://www.oakspark.com/

While one ride at the Douglas County Fair will cost you about $5 per person for a 1-2 minute ride, you'll be able to purchase a ride bracelet at Oaks Park on Sept. 11th for only $11.50. You are free to ride as many rides as you would like - or that your stomach can handle - for that price.  ☺

The "Homeschool Families Only" Day is nice because it's very family-friendly:  no or little smoking, inappropriate clothing, alcohol, swearing, and a lot of the things you would normally encounter at the county fair in this day and age. Oaks Park is filled with homeschooling families enjoying the day together.

There are nice picnic areas to sit and eat a meal that you've brought from home, or there are also food vendors available. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Quite a few of us here traveled up to Oaks Park over the last few years and have had a blast! :)

Note:   Miniature golf, games, go carts, concessions, and Open Skate Session admission sold separately. Not valid with other offers; bracelet valid day of event only.

Also, visit the OHEN Homeschooling Resource Fair in Area 1 from 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM!

Giveaway for $120 Friendly Chemistry curriculum!

8/31/2015

Picture
We used Friendly Chemistry with our oldest last year (she was a junior in high school at home), and it was an excellent fit for her high school chemistry requirement.  We also own Bob Jones Chemistry and Apologia Chemistry, as well as some of Real Science 4 Kids' Chemistry program, but you'll have to read why we put those aside and used Friendly Chemistry instead.  It was fabulous!  We'll be using it this year with our youngest daughter and her friend that we homeschool (both sophomores).

The author of Friendly Chemistry is allowing me to host a giveaway for one full student/parent set of his chemistry curriculum ($120 value).  Here's where to enter the giveaway, which ends Tuesday, September 8th at midnight:
